Summary

The Language Specialist is responsible to create, promote, support, and implement a partnership and working relations with the local school authorities and schools. The Language Specialist will help and support the language and culture programs and work with the local community Language and Culture staff, under the direction of the Shibogama Language Coordinator.

Duties & Responsibilities

Must work and liaise closely with local education staff, Shibogama Education Authority, education directors, and parents to support the schools’ language needs.

Evaluate and monitor to recommend improvements in the language programs.

Make recommendations and strategies to Shibogama Education to ensure effective language programs to the student’s needs.

Assist communities in identifying their priorities in regards to the revitalization of language in the community and school.

Assist the principal in the communities to ensure effective language strategic programming for language.

Develop curriculum with local staff and Shibogama Education to support the language retention and revitalization.

Provide analysis and updates to the communities on all applicable education policies and regulations affecting the students.

Organize language fairs and events as required to promote language in the communities.

Provide translation of materials as required for student use in the classroom.

Prepare updates, briefing notes, and presentations for Shibogama Education.

Participate and attend the meetings as required.

Provide any other duties as directed by Shibogama Education.

Qualifications

Degree/diploma in education and/or experience in the field of education.

Effective communication skills.

Fluency in Oji-Cree an asset.

Experience in writing curriculum an asset

Must be able to travel.

Reports to: Language Coordinator

Salary Range $70,000 - $80,00
